Note: This is only for new students who have not yet done the work! I've decided on a new rule! No due date will be given as everyone is busy with real life and all! So, you can choose to either do the work or not!
*You walk into the Ancient Runes classroom, feeling both excited and curious at the same time. You take a seat and waits for the Professor to start her lesson*
Alright, students! As promised, the first lesson is here! Here is an introduction to runes. I would like you to copy them into your notebook for future references.
In addition to writing, runes have been used for divination and magic. The word rune mean mystery, secret or whisper and each rune has esoteric meanings and properties associated to it. Each rune also has its own phonetic value used for writing.
In Norse mythology, Odin, the Norse High God of the Aesir, hung from the world tree, Yggdrasil, impaled on his own spear, for nine days and nights in order to gain the knowledge of runes. When the runes appeared below him, he reached down and took them up, and the runic knowledge gave him power. He later passed on this knowledge to the Vanir goddess Freya. She, in turn, taught him the magic of seidr. Heimdall, the god who guarded the Rainbow Bridge, taught the runes to mankind.
There are many variations of the runic alphabets. We will mostly be studying the Elder Futhark as it is the most common. The Elder Futhark contains 24 letters divided into three groups of eight, called Aett (aettir, plural). The first eight is called Freyja's Aett, the second Heimdall's Aett and the third Tyr's Aett. The first six runes of the alphabet spell out the word "FUTHARK".
Alright, that's the most basic thing you need to know about the runes. Now, homework time! I would like you to answer these questions and PM them to me! You can get a maximum of 10 points for this homework. (1 point per question. Everyone will get the 1 point for question 10 no matter how they answer it as it is a bonus question.)
1. What does the word rune mean?
2. Who is Odin?
3. How is he important?
4. Who did he pass on his knowledge to?
5. Who taught the runes to mankind?
6. How many Aetts are there in the Elder Furthark?
7. What is the name of the first Aett?
8. What is the name of the second Aett?
9. What is the name of the third Aett?
10. BONUS QUESTION: Why did you choose this class? (Give me an honest answer, be blunt, I don't mind!)
