Good morning class! Welcome to the first second years' Arithmancy class of the year. I'm very sorry this is a bit late getting started; I've been very busy. The Arithmancy Course I, was pretty much the basics of the subject (how to find character, heart, and social numbers). This Arithmancy course is going to be based on the subject of Arithmancy (what it is, it's origin, and its uses). To start off, who can remember how you find a person's character number?

*raises hand* "To find the character number you simply 1.)match up the numbers, 2.)add the numbers, 3.) reduce to a 1-digit answer, Professor."

"That's alright. And, you can have 5 house points for answering the question correctly." *turns back to the class* "And, who can tell us how to find the heart number?"

"I'm not sure anymore but I believe you have match up the numbers of the vowels, add them and then reduce them to a 1-digit answer."

"That's right. Match up the vowels, add them up, reduce to 1-digit number. Excellent, 5 points to gryffindor. Now what about the social number?"

"Right. Another 5 to Gryffindor. Now does anyone remember what a heart number tells us about the person?"

"Okay. That one was hard. The heart number tells us a person's inner desires, fears, and other feelings. Anyway let's get this new lesson started off."
Course II / Lesson I Arithmancy (from the Greek word 'arithmo', meaning 'number', and 'mancy', meaning 'prophecy') has been used by magicians and wizards for more than 2,000 years to help people.......... 1.) Analyze and develop their strengths and talents. 2.) Overcome obstacles. 3.) Chart their future paths. Also known as 'numerology,' arithmancy is based on 2 very old ideas. 1.) A person's name contains important clues to their character and destiny. 2.) [suggested by Greek sage, Pythagoras] Each of the numbers between 1 and 9 has a unique meaning that can contribute to the understanding of all things. Arithmancers combined these two ideas, and over the centuries, developed many complex systems for converting names into numbers and analyzing the results. One of the most widely used systems involves extracting three key numbers from a person's name - the heart, social, and character numbers - and interpreting the outcome according to a set of established meaning. (This is, of course, the system I teach in the Arithmancy Course I.) I will teach the established meaning in a later lesson. I will pick up here next lesson.
Homework: 1.) State the 2 main ideas that arithmancy is based on. 2.) State the 3 main reasons people use arithmancy today. 3.) Find the character, heart, and social number of your name.
