The word mythology comes from the word ‘myth’. A myth is usually a traditional story of historical events that serves to explain a pratice, belief, or natural phenomenon. There are many different types of mythologies some of them are, greek mythology, roman mythology, norse mythology and egyptian mythology. The first one that we are going to learn about is greek mythology.
The first thing that we are going to learn about greek mythology is the olympian gods. In greek mythology 12 gods and godesses ruled the universe from atop Greece’s Mount Olympus. The leader of these gods was Zeus, son of Kronus and Rhea. Zeus, the god of the sky was the most powerful. Hera, the goddess of marriage and the queen of Olympus was Zeus’s wife and sister. Poseidon, the god of the sea was Zeus’s brother and was also a very powerful god second only to Zeus. Hades, the king of the dead was Zeus’s brother. He lived in the underworld where he ruled over the dead. Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, protector of the sailors was the daughter of Zeus and the Titan Dione. Apollo was the god of music and healing, he was the son of Zeus and the Titan Leto. Ares was the god of war, he was the son of Zeus and Hera. Artemis was the goddes of hunt and the protector of women in childbirth. She was the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin of Apollo. Athena was the goddess of wisdom. Athena sprang full-grown from the forehead of Zeus, and became his favorite child. Hephaestus was the god of fire and the forge, he was the son of Zeus and Hera and he later on married Aphrodite. Hestia was the goddess of the hearth, she was the sister of Zeus and the oldest of the Olympians. Finally Hermes was the messenger god, he was the son of Zeus and the constellation Maia.
